Hossainpur Upazila :

Hossainpur Upazila (kishoreganj district) with an area of 193.73 sq km, is bounded by nandail upazila on the north, pakundia and gaffargaon upazilas on the south, kishoreganj sadar upazila on the east, Gaffargaon upazila on the west. Main rivers are old brahmaputra and Narsunda; noted depression Panan Beel.

Hossainpur (Town) consists of three mouzas. The area of the town is 4.51 sq km. It has a population of 13754; male 51.84%, female 48.16%. Density of population is 3049 per sq km. Literacy rate among the town people is 30.1%.

Administration Hossainpur thana, now an upazila, was established in 1922. It consists of six union parishads, 71 mouzas and 101 villages.

Historical events During the war of liberation in an encounter at Hossainpur the mukti bahini killed 39 members of the Pakistan army and captured huge amount of arms and ammunitions. On 18 November the freedom fighters destroyed a bridge by explosive. They attacked a Razakar Camp and captured 14 Razakars along with their arms.

Archaeological heritage and relics Pitalganj Nil Kuthi (Indigo Centre, 1800), Temple at the Palace of the Gangatia Zamindar, Kulishwari Kali Mandir.

Population 148028; male 51.49%, female 48.51%; Muslim 97.62%, Hindu 2.27% and others 0.11%.

Literacy and educational institutions Average literacy 23.1%, male 27.4% and female 18.5%. Educational institution: college 2, high school 8, madrasa 46, government primary school 54, non-government primary school 10; noted institution: Hossainpur High School (1936).

Main occupations Agriculture 56.69%, agricultural labourer 18.43%, wage labourer 3.38%, commerce 10.63%, transport 2.02%, service 2.65%, others 6.20%.

Land use Single crop 7%, double crop 35% and treble crop land 58%; land under irrigation 31%.

Land control Among the peasants 27.84% are landless, 24.48% marginal, 27.96% small, 12.39% intermediate and 7.33% rich.

Value of land The market value of land of the first grade is Tk 10000 per 0.01 hectare.

Main crops Paddy, jute, wheat, mustard seed, potato, brinjal, chilli, corn, betel leaf and patal.

Extinct or nearly extinct crops Local varieties of paddy, khesari and kalai.

Main fruits Jackfruit, mango, banana, coconut, papaya, palm, bel (wood apple), ata, jamrul.

Fisheries, dairies, poultries Dairy 10, poultry 124, fishery 1 and hatchery 20.

Communication facilities Roads: pucca 11 km, semi pucca 8 km and mud road 281.

Traditional transport Palanquin, bullock cart, horse carriage. These means of transport are either extinct or nearly extinct.

Manufactories Flour mill 16, welding 24.

Cottage industries Bamboo work 120, goldsmith 31, blacksmith 79, potteries 37, wood work 121, tailoring 170.

Hats, bazars and fairs Hats and bazars are 20, most noted of which are Hossainpur Bazar, Banagram, Jinari, Bhangatia, Pitalganj, Rampur, Aman Sarkar, Harenja, Govindapur, Charpumdi, Sahedal.

Main exports Paddy, jute, wheat, potato, pulse, sugarcane molasses and banana.
