Mithamain Upazila :

Mithamain Upazila (kishoreganj district) with an area of 222.92 sq km, is bounded by itna and ajmiriganj upazilas on the north, austagram upazila on the south, baniachang and Austagram upazilas on the east, karimganj and nikli upazilas on the west. Noted rivers are Dhanu and Kalai; depressions: Boragop, Haturia, Deoduria and Nikli Beel.

Mithamain (Town) consists of one mouza. The area of the town is 9.15 sq km. It has a population of 9094; male 54.06%, female 45.94%. Literacy rate among the town people is 24.2%; male 32.1%, female 14.8%. The town has one dakbungalow.

Administration Mithamain thana was turned into an upazila in 1983. The upazila consists of 6 union parishads, 59 mouzas and 129 villages.

Historical events During the War of Liberation the Pakistan army killed 17 people at village Dhobajora (Sadagar Bhuiyan Bari). They also killed 62 people at village Satish of Kathakhal union. Besides, the Pakistan army captured many people from Itna haor area on their way to India and killed them.

Population 108204; male 51.79%, female 48.21%; Muslim 90.31%, Hindu 9.07%, Buddhist 0.12%, Christian 0.12% and others 0.38%.

Literacy and educational institutions Average literacy 15.6%; male 20.7% and female 10.2%. Educational institutions: college 1, high school 8, madrasa 5, government primary school 37, community school 10.

Main occupations Agriculture 49.30%, fishing 2.8%, agricultural labourer 30.51%, wage labourer 3.01%, commerce 5.46%, service 1.92%, others 7%.

Land control Among the peasants 30% are landless, 35% small, 25% intermediate and 10% rich.

Value of land The market value of the land of the first grade is Tk 2000 per 0.01 hectare.

Main crops Paddy, mustard seed, potato, ground nut, kherai, brinjal and tomato.

Extinct or nearly extinct crops Linseed, sesame and kaun.

Dairies, poultries Dairy 22, poultry 26.

Traditional transport Palanquin (extinct).

Manufactories Ice factory 1, workshop 1, bakery 1.

Cottage industries Goldsmith 6, blacksmith 5, potteries 5, wood work 100.

Hats, bazars and fairs Most noted hats and bazars are Mithamain Bazar, Gopdighi and Dhaki.

Main exports Paddy, peanut, sweet potato and kherai.
